Malaysian fixed line incumbent Telekom Malaysia (TM) has said that it is on target to launch commercial services over its in-deployment High Speed Broadband (HSBB) network by the end of the first quarter of 2010, Bernama reports. The telco has revealed that infrastructure development work has now moved beyond the Inner Klang Valley region and into Putrajaya and the southern economic region of Iskandar Malaysia, primarily in Nusajaya. The operator has also announced that it has now completed work in the four exchanges of Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam and Bangsar, noting: ‘The four locations were the target areas for TM's initial service rollout and [it] is now rolling out the HSBB network in Nusajaya and Putrajaya.’ According to TM, as of end-December 2009 more than 150,000 premises were passed by the new fibre-optic network, and by end-2012 approximately 1.3 million premises nationwide are expected to have access to the new infrastructure. TM has also said that by the end of 2009 its capital expenditure on the HSBB project had reached MYR1.9 billion; the telco expects to spend around MYR8.9 billion on the construction of the HSBB, while the Malaysian government will invest MYR2.4 billion.
In addition, TM expects to add more users to ongoing trials of services over the HSBB, with the telco noting: ‘Over the next three months, a further 2,000 to 2,500 households in the four initial HSBB launch areas will be involved in the user trial for retail HSBB services.’ In December 2009 TM revealed that approximately 120 households in Bangsar, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam were participating in trials of the network.
